the Blunt Umbrella

I think this is just what I need in this time of day.

You know that the Earth is getting hotter, and the nice and warm sunshine can be merciless to your skin by inflicting *God forbid* skin cancer. *shivers*

That's why I always carry my trusted umbrella in my bag, and use it EVERYWHERE. I may look uncool or oh-so-granny-like, but one thing I know, it will be even more un-cool if I have skin cancer! :P

So..

This is just what I need. :)
A Blunt Umbrella!

You know how the sides of your umbrella can actually "poke" someone in the face? :D
Ah, with this cool invention, worry not people, poke no more! And we can keep on using our umbrellas everywhere without worry of hurting other people. :D

Nice! :)

Video of the Day : Eike König Interview

This video of the day is also inspiration of the day.
It's very healthy for a designer to talk about their design; and to talk with other designer, sharing thoughts and ideas.

And it's very inspiring to see this interview, and see this cool German graphic designer approach their design; and what kind of work ethics did they have.

It makes me realize the true joy and meaning in being a designer. :) And the way he describes a person getting caught up in their computer-work and chatted on internet messenger or Facebook, it's exactly like me! *LOL* :-S

I am so loving this one! So clever and very timely. :)

Somehow it reminds me of a mini bird's nest.

10 Most Stylish Plants on Interior Design for 2010

Global warming; human's increasing awareness of the importance of embracing Nature as an integral part of our lives and not just a commodity or slaves; it inspires designers from all around the World to take a closer look at Nature and see what inspiration can it brings. For we only need to be aware, and to really see.

2009 will soon pass in just a few days.. And reminiscing the past and concept designs we've seen so far, I want to play Oracle :D and make a compendium of 10 Most Stylish Plants on Design for 2010.

So here goes (in random order) .. :D

1. Succulents

Design 2050 : Possibilities for Tomorrow

As you can see in the above pic, the 2009 Singapore Design Festival title is Design 2050 : Possibilities for Tomorrow. A biennial event which I'm lucky enough to see this year. :) Heck, I might not be still living here next year. Anyway, the overall score is good and enlightening. Definitely inspiring, although sadly few of the events that I want to attend is either closed on weekends or fully booked. :(

Below are random arrays of the exhibition in one of the Design Hub; the City Hall.
And as my twitter-friend @artshyster said, "Visual artists interested in visuals not words"; so you won't see much of my writing on the design concept explanation. You can just google it. Here you will see visual inspirations. Things that catch my eye and would be quite useful as a design inspiration. Although sadly sometimes it wouldn't show any of the actual artwork/ design exhibited.

The the credits of each installation will of course be written. :)

Enjoy! :)

Title : Polish Architects Exhibition 2009

Title : Singapore Souvenir
This is the most clever souvenir! I always have a hard time differentiating between Kopi, Kopi O, Kopi C and the likes of it. Something that's definitely "Uniquely Singaporean". But with this "color chart"; I wouldn't be lost anymore! :D

Title : Mobile : Vehicles & Platforms
Artist : Anita Nevens

Title : Sustainab.Italy

Title : CCC Character Festival
Artists : Atelier Sango, Planet Planter, Hexa Project

Title : V for Vase
Artist : Hans Tan Studio

Title : Beyond Typography - Singapore Pangram

Now this is also one exhibition that allow us to explore a whole lot of different experience. But the room is too dark for me to take any pictures. Maybe it's better to leave it in the dark, and just put it as a reminder for a good spatial & visual experience. What's left above are the ones that can be easily photographed.

Design Revolution - 100 products that empower people

In the rage of e-books and information overflow from the internet, now people (me) are getting more and more selective with hard copies that they bought. And this book, in my opinion, is one of those books worth buying.

I'd buy it for my personal collection, and to appreciate the featured inventors/ designers and honor them for designing something that really works, and made a whole lot of sense too!

This is one of my favorite design, the Playground Fence by Tejo Remy and René Veenhuizen.

The 'Design Revolution: 100 Products That Empower People' is written by Emily Pilloton, the founder and Executive Director of Project H Design, a global industrial design nonprofit with eight chapters around the world. Current Project H initiatives include water transport and filtration systems in South Africa and India; an educational math playground built for elementary schools in Uganda and North Carolina; a homeless-run design coop in Los Angeles; and design concepts for foster care education and therapy in Austin, Texas.

Well done Ma'am. Recruit me, please? :D

Tokujin Yoshioka - The Design Genius

I love this guy.

:)

I really do. I Loooooooooooooooooooovvee his designs.
And his latest design (that I found) is this Lake of Shimmer/ Crystal Lake for Swarovski.

It is a 9m x 8m wall of 16000 octagonal mirrors, which all are computer-controlled to be angled as the programmed movement. The crystal-like small mirrors flutter in the wind to mimic the effect of sunlight on a lake. It's beautiful! And a very smart design. :)

Vlinder Furniture

Vlinder is an Indonesia-based unique furniture company, besides everything else. Based in Bandung, in the heart of education, youth and creativity of Indonesia (besides Yogyakarta, of course), makes it a perfect place for such a brand to flourish.

Their premiere creations are using the Playful theme. Some of the products are hilarious and sometimes ridiculous, but definitely a great conversation starter.

Below is the Laptop Pingpong, their best selling item. It's actually a Laptop table with storage and obviously also functioned as an exercise tool for those who couldn't be away from their laptop (and the table) and in need of a little fun to brightened up the stuffed minds. :)

This next piece is a Tetris inspired shelving system. A modular shelves which can be bought per piece or the whole set that can also functioned as a room divider.

Another highlight from their Playful line is the Rak Pohon (Tree Shelf). This shelf has also incorporate light and carpet in the design. Which makes it a very convenient creation for all the bookworms out there. :)

The last (but not least!) design for Vlinder's Playful line is the Meja Setrika Neraka or Hell's Ironing Board. When I first saw this design I can't stop laughing. :D The design was obviously affected by general depiction of hell, a scary place with lots of horrible fire and tormenting tools for people who has wasted their life on Earth by doing more evil than good. In the promotional image you can see this dark-robed guy with horn (presumably the Devil himself), is ironing this board. Which shaped like a person with anguished (if not excited) expression. :D

All of this products (and more!) you can see in their official website http://vlinderism.multiply.com/ .
